Learn to swim academy and beyond

Learn to Swim with Hartlepool Swimming Club’s ‘Swim Academy’ and become a Star!!

We have learn to swim groups for beginners,  children as young as 5 years old at Tunstall Active Pool. Once your swimmer has completed the learn to swim academy they can and are encouraged go on to Advanced Improver and beyond that, Competitive Swimming through to International Swimming! (HSC Performance squad) at Mill House leisure centre.

Learn to Swim

Learn to Swim lessons are led by a team of skilled instructors – Charlotte, Ben, and Derek – with support from Sandra and Nicola at the poolside. Sessions are available on Wednesday evenings, Saturdays, and Sunday mornings. New swimmers are invited to attend a session to determine the appropriate level or class. Participants are requested to come prepared for swimming at Tunstall Active, with swimwear already on and easy-to-change outerwear. It is recommended to wear swim caps, and parents or caregivers may find it helpful to ensure the cap is worn before entering the Tunstall Active facility. Parents can observe the lessons during the final 10 minutes. Lessons are 30mins and booked in blocks of ten, costing £45 payable via bank transfer or cash.

Pre Squad Swimming

Once your child completes their swim lessons, what comes next? It doesn’t have to be the end of their swimming journey! HSC offers Pre-Squad training for swimmers after they finish the Learn to Swim levels. With experienced instructors like Ben and Charlotte, they can help bridge the gap between learning to swim and joining the full squad. This training focuses on enhancing specific technical skills and building stamina. Additionally, participants get the chance to take part in the HSC annual gala, where they can engage in a friendly competition, boost their confidence, apply their learning, and be acknowledged for their hard work at the presentation evening. Pre Squad is ran from Mill House Leisure Centre, usually on a Tuesday and Friday.

Squad Swimming

Once your swimmer achieves proficiency in all four swimming strokes, they will have the chance to join the Squad. This entails participating in training sessions led by Head Coach Ian Bullock and our highly experienced coach, Shirley Black. The primary emphasis is on athletic growth and honing racing skills. Squad members engage in competitive swimming by taking part in galas in the North East. Despite swimming being an individual sport, there is a strong sense of camaraderie within the squad.
